Paimio Sanatorium’s Development Project Moves Forward

Paimio Sanatorium is entering an important new stage in its long-term development. The proposed state funding would enable essential renovation work and support the site’s transformation into a leading cultural and wellbeing destination.

State proposes €10M for renovation

According to the Finnish State’s proposed amendments to the budget 2026, the State is to contribute 10 million euros to the total renovation and long-term preservation of Paimio Sanatorium in 2026–2029, with the first instalment of the appropriation, €1.5 million,  included in the 2026 budget. The funding will be decided on by the Finnish Parliament when it approves the budget for 2026.

The renovation funding and its implementation are essential for advancing the planning of the Sanatorium’s future use as well as further financing negotiations for the project.

Towards a wellbeing-focused future

In a development project launched in 2022, expert assessments identified a wellbeing center/hotel concept as the most suitable future use for the Sanatorium. The property, including the main building and fourteen additional structures, is managed by the Paimio Sanatorium Foundation’s subsidiary company. Planning work has involved specialists from Finland and abroad, ensuring that the transformation respects both architectural and cultural values.

A globally recognised architectural landmark

Designed by Alvar and Aino Aalto and completed in 1933, the Paimio Sanatorium is internationally recognised as a masterpiece of modernist architecture and one of Finland’s most important cultural landmarks. The site holds a key place within the thirteen Aalto works included in the UNESCO serial nomination, with progress toward World Heritage designation expected in 2026.

Since opening to the public in summer 2021, the Sanatorium has welcomed approximately 150,000 domestic and international visitors, highlighting its significance as a growing cultural tourism destination.

Renovation to advance with national partners

The proposed funding would enable renovation work to progress in close cooperation with the Finnish Heritage Agency and the Alvar Aalto Foundation. The project is expected to bring broad cultural and regional benefits and strengthen the Sanatorium’s potential as a leading Nordic destination for heritage, architecture and wellbeing experiences.

“This decision marks a major step”

Mirkku Kullberg, Chair of the Board of the Paimio Sanatorium Foundation, emphasises the importance of the funding decision:
“This decision marks a major step. Renovation will protect cultural heritage and renew the building’s original purpose related to care and healing, expressed today as a holistic wellbeing environment.”
